Home Risks in Cases of Poor Ventilation

 In Blog

Have you ever been in a home or store where you just feel congested? You can’t determine what exactly is causing it, you just feel like you cannot get a proper breath. It is easy to worry in a situation like this, believing that there is something wrong with you, or your lungs. Then, you step outside into the fresh air, and suddenly everything is back to normal.

There is a good chance that this “off” feeling you experienced was due to poor ventilation. Many don’t recognize right off the bat if there is something wrong with the ventilation in their home. However, if this goes on for too long, there are many ways that this can negatively impact the entire family.

Allergens

Some people are more susceptible to allergies than others. If someone in your family is very susceptible to seasonal allergies, they will likely be one of the first affected by poor ventilation. An efficient ventilation system filters allergens, such as pollen and dust, out of homes. If the system is not working properly, these allergens can get caught in the home and even build up over time.

Asthma

Like people with allergies, people with asthma often notice a flawed ventilation system in the home rather quickly. Asthma can be extremely sensitive to damp and moldy conditions that a proper ventilation system rids the home of. If someone in your home is suffering from frequent asthma attacks or respiratory issues, you might consider having your ventilation system checked.

Back drafting

Without a properly working ventilation system, a condition called “back drafting” can plague your home. This occurs when the pressure inside of the home is lower than the pressure outside of the home due to poor ventilation. This pulls outdoor air into the home, which can allow dangerous toxins such as carbon monoxide to enter through an open door or chimney and get trapped in the home.

Whether you live in Denver, Lakewood, or Colorado Springs, don’t let that dry air enter your home without proper ventilation. Contact Horn Brothers Roofing today for a free estimate and let us handle your ventilation needs.
