Two Outstanding Durable Materials for Your Roofing Project
Concrete and Clay Tiles
Concrete roof tiles are made from a mixture of cement, sand, and water. To mold these tiles, a process that involves heating the tiles and exposing them to a high pressure is involved. Once this process has been completed, the result is a super strong roofing material and very resistant to water. Moreover, the outer material can be painted, and you can buy pre-made tiles, or you can have them custom-made.
Clay roof tiles are made by mixing clay and water. And just like concrete, a heating process is used for producing these tiles. However, unlike its concrete counterpart, length of time the tile is exposed to a high temperature determines its density. A clay tile cannot be painted, but there are more baking colors available.
The Differences Between Concrete & Clay Roofing Tiles
Cost
Both roofing options a very expensive to install. However, clay tiles are approximately 30% more expensive than concrete.
Water Absorption Rate
They’re both going to keep the water out, but clay tiles will develop less mildew over time than concrete tiles because the concrete has a water absorption rate of around 13% while clay has a water absorption rate of around 6%.
Break and Shatter-Resistance
Colder climates can cause clay tiles to crack or shatter more than concrete tiles.
Weight
Perhaps the most noticeable difference is that concrete tiles weigh approximately 40% more clay tiles. Because of this, concrete tiles can only be used on roof structures that have a high level of reinforcement.
Overall, concrete is less costly than clay but it is significantly heavier, so it is not the best material option for applications with little structural support.
