How to Locate a Roof Leak
Leaks can be a huge problem for many homeowners. Oftentimes, it’s hard to spot exactly where the leak is coming from. This can lead to unnecessary frustration from all parties involved. To locate a roof leak in your Colorado Springs home, try narrowing down different areas of the roof before moving forward.
1. Go Inside
It’s important to head inside first to locate the leak. You must determine whether or not this leak is because of the roof, or if it’s another component of your home. This means eliminating plumbing, roof drains, and condensation from the possible causes.
2. Measure the Location
Once you’ve established that the leak is a roof related problem, you must measure the precise location of the leak from two specific areas. These fixed areas can be the outside walls, a window, or the fireplace chimney, as long as you’ll be able to tell the distance from your attic and roof.
3. Visit the Attic
You must visit the attic to locate the leak on the underside of the sub-roof. Using the same measurements from the living space, try to find additional points where the water is coming from in relation to areas in the attic. This can be pipes, vents, and chimney. Worst case scenario, you will have to base the location off of the exterior walls.
4. Head to the Roof
Once you’ve taken the proper measurements of where you think the leak is located, it’s time to head to the roof. By this point, you will have a general area of where to start looking. Any minor hole is an opportunity for water to get inside. Once you’ve found the hole, replace the roofing material and you’re done.
Your measurements may not be accurate, especially if you’re measuring your roof for the first time, so you may need to make multiple trips.
